52 weeks in Paris - The Short Way

by Ric Erickson
Salon Poster Number 1.04 - Metropole Paris, Friday, 15. March 1996:- Although this is issue number four of Metropole, this week I am celebrating - if that is word for it - my 52nd week of online 'Reports from Paris.'

The first report, about last year's Salon de Livre, was up and online on St Patrick's Day, 17. March 1995 - it appeared on Norman Barth's excellent Web site, 'The Paris Pages - Les Pages de Paris.' I do not intend to work on St Patrick's Day this year; I am going to a nearby Irish pub and I am going to watch some friends get tiddely. Actually they are going to do something to their faces; get bleep-faced in fact - because the Irish and their fans seldom get merely 'tiddely.' Just as they didn't last year when they were right on top of me here.

While on the subject of the Irish and Ireland, I should mention that there is a series of cultural events currently happening in Paris and throughout France, named, 'L'Imaginaire Irlandais 1996.' The program started last week and it will run through to August.

Tonight there will be a 'Soirée de Lancement' at the Academie Française; tomorrow night a 'Concert de Lancement' at the Grand Hall at Le Villette, followed by an Irish 'Célli' (dance); a rock concert on Sunday, and Irish movie night at L'Entrepot on Monday. At the upcoming Salon de Livre, 15 Irish publishers will be taking part within the framework of 'L'Imaginaire Irlandais,' and that will be from the 22nd To the 27th of March.

If you have managed to follow these 'reports' for the past year, you will know that we seldom know in advance what we're going to 'cover' next. This is going to change a bit. When we get surprised, we will try to get the news online on time - that is, we won't wait for the regular issue date of Friday. On the other hand, we are gong to look forward as far as we can, so that we can give better coverage to scheduled events.

As this is sort of the anniversary number, one scheduled event we can tell you to look forward to will be our coverage of this year's Salon de Livre, the 16th, which kicks off next Friday, 22. March.

It will be a bigger salon this year with more stands, more publishers, more everything. This year the 'country of honor' will be the United States and 84 American publishers are expected to showing their wares - and there will be a large number of living American authors present, including a couple of my favorites and some others I would like to get to know.

Nevertheless, the main show will be the French - and Francophone - publishing worlds. The number of these publishers will be about 20 percent more than last year. Although present in 1995, the French world of multimedia publishing will be represented by many more products. There were 12 stands last year; this year there will be 48.

That will bring these reports full-circle - from St. Patrick's to St. Patrick's. Ah, sure and it is a short way too.
