The view of the terrace of l'Européen

Bubbly Parisian Terrace Memories

via eMail, from Mike Harmon Dear Ric,

Paris:- Monday, 14. April 1997:- Your mention of the Gare de Lyon brings back memories of my visit in 1994.

Three of us sat there one very hot afternoon on the terrace of l'Européen, directly across the street from the Gare and got totally plastered on champagne - not the cheap kind either since I was buying! I think it was Moët. Anyway we plopped ourselves down right at the crosswalk across from the métro exit and started drinking one glass at a time.

After a while, the girls thought it was silly and too expensive to drink by the glass, so they talked me into getting a bottle - at US$110 each, I think - a little later we got the second and last one. What a day!

The only strange thing was when somebody in a crowd walking by, as we were laughing and drinking, said in a muffled voice, "bourgeoisie!" I was so happy I hardly noticed it, but all the same it bugged me a little bit. I ended up crashing all night in my hotel room at the Palme. Wow, what a fun time! Thanks for the reminder.

Mike

Not Everybody's Cup of Tea

Dear Mike,

Paris:- Saturday, 19. April 1997:- French medical experts have estimated that the effects of champagne are multiplied by two if you are with more than one lady while drinking; are multiplied by three if you do it on a terrace which is catching the sun; by 2.5 if it is very hot; by another 1.8 if the terrace is facing the Gare de Lyon; and finally, multiplied by a whole four for all amounts superior to more than a half-bottle per person, depending on weight, age, size and country of origin, and the time involved.

Your personal status in life has no affect whatsoever, which means you can ignore the 'muttered "bourgeoisie" remark.' That could be attributed to sour grapes.

Regards, Ric
