Normally this would translate as 'Blues in the 'Burbs' but in this case it is the name of a long-running annual jazz festival which runs through to Thursday, 9. April. There are 36 evening performances billed, featuring 53 bands, with 19 new creations. The info card I have for it says the festival will be playing in 16 different towns in the Seine-Saint-Denis department, so for this one, you should call the Info. Le Retour - Musée Khombôl

I have received a interesting-looking invitation to the opening of a new exhibition - but I have had to hunt high Musee Khombol and low - by low, I mean down to the surface of one of my desks - to find out anything about it.

Here it is: Driss Sans-Arcidet is an artist who comes from near the village of Arques, where Ossip Zadkine had a second residence - where part of Zadkine's work now occupies a museum which is sort of an annex to the one in Paris.

Apparently, Sans-Arcidet, who was born in 1960, has 'followed Zadkine through WWII' and is the founder of the Museum Khombôl, which is only dedicated to 'Universal Conservation.' In the case of the exhibition in Paris, this seems to involve a collection of suitcases, bags, carry-alls, wicker-baskets, steamer trunks, old satchels; some sort of Noah's Ark full of stuff which may be luggage, which may evoke eroticism or deportation or you name it.

Musée Zadkine, 100 bis, rue d'Assas, Paris 6. Métro: Vavin or Notre-Dame-des-Champs
From Wednesday, 11. March until Sunday, 24. May. Open daily from 10:00 until 17:30; except Mondays

Coming Sooner: 'Lulu'

I once used Wedekindplatz in Schwabing in Munich as sort of a living room for a period of about six or seven weeks, so I have had a feeling for Frank Wedekind for a long time; partly because Theatre Chaillot - 'Lulu' the open-air platzsittting was a long time ago.

From what I was told, old Frank was a Schwabing sort of type, and they seemed okay to me. Frank would put on a play nobody could understand and the bourgeoisie downtown would go berserk about it, and Frank would get arrested - which hardly ever happens to play writers these days.

If it is the same 'Lulu,' then nobody knew how it was to be played, and it is only within the last 20 years - or is it 15? - that it has been staged. If it is not this 'Lulu,' then I am thinking about some other 'Lulu,' and I'm sorry I mentioned it.

This version is directed by Hans Peter Cloos, and features Romane Bohringer, Brigitte Catillon and Rediep Mitrovitsa.

'Lulu' by Frank Wedekind; at the Théâtre National de Chaillot
1. place du Trocadéro, Paris 16. Info. Tel.: 01 53 65 30 00. Métro: line six or nine.
On from Thursday, 12. March until Thursday, 30. April. Performances at 20:30 and 15:00 on Sundays; closed Mondays.
