For the Rentrée?

Paris:- Saturday, 1. September 2001:- While Parisian parents muddle through next week adjusting to their return to the city and their kids' return to schools, the events calendar takes one final little breather, before it launches into the new season.

This really starts on the following weekend of 15-16. September, with the Fête de l'Huma' getting a jump on it by starting on Friday. There will be no 'Fêtes de la Seine' this year, but there will be an international fishing contest instead. Expect the riverside party to return next year.

Events for Fall 2001 were outlined in a separate column last week, and this has even been updated a little - but still remains within last week's issue 6.35. A link to this page is included here, and below this week's contents list.

A few more new items beginning in September are below for 'Openers' - while nearly everything that is over is gone from the scene, all except for the 'Last Chances' of course.

• The Fall / Winter Season Begins

Fête de l'Humanité - it used to be the 'rentrée's big party, but now it competes with everything else. But the 'Fête de l'Huma' has lots of experience and lots of everything, from Manu Chao to Patrick Bruel to Compay Segundo - plus! - techno nights. It starts on Friday, 14. September and winds up on Sunday, 16. September. Entry for three days is 60 francs. At the Parc de La Courneuve, Espace Fêtes. Take the RER 'B' line to Le Bourget and follow the crowds.

Les Journées du Patrimoine - this is the weekend - on Saturday, 15. September and on Sunday, 16. September - when France shows off its treasures, some of which are not usually open to the public, such as some of Paris' churches. Paris' own 'Maison des Parisiens' - the Hôtel de Ville - also opens its doors on Saturday from 14:00 to 18:00 and on Sunday from 9:30 to 18:00. Main entry by the front door. Hôtel de Ville, Paris 4. La Course des Femmes - is sponsored by Le Parisien so it's called 'La Parisienne' for its 5th edition and will be run off over a seven kilometre course in the Jardins de Bagatelle. Electrocadéro? - the one-time Techno-Parade gets a new name but the non-parade planned for Trocadéro is unwelcome there. Wherever it will be, it should take place on Saturday, 15. Savignac - one of the best poster designers in the last half the last century, Raymond Savignac had his first displayed in 1933. This exhibition runs from Tuesday, 11. September to Saturday, 12. UNESCO's Patrimony In Japan - has gathered 50 photos by Kazuoshi Miyoshi, showing Japan's sites selected by UNESCO to be part of the planet's patrimony. Until Saturday, 29. Lettonie, Latvija - is an exhibition from the collection of the National Museum of History of Latvia. The occasion is the 800th anniversary of the founding of Riga. Until Sunday, 20. January. Art-Wall Sticker - instead of having boring old wallpaper in rolls, 'Art-Wall Sticker' is a set of stickers that will cover about 15 square metres. These sets are designed by 20 different artists and seriographed, mostly on a transparent backing. My favorite is 'Socks' by Santiago Reyes, which has 45 versions of people with mis-matched pairs of socks and feet. It's up to you how to arrange them on your favorite wall. Babel TV - Patrick Mimran will be at the Orangerie de Bagatelle from Friday, 7. September until Monday, 15. October, from 11:00 to 18:00 daily except Tuesdays. 27th Festival Cinéma Américain - this annual event provides an evening alternative to Deauville's casino following an afternoon at the racetrack. I'm not sure if its purpose is to give Europe a preview of coming US films or gives US actors a chance to plug Hollywood's latest attractions on TV-news here. Whichever - or both! - from Friday, 31. Pre-Columbian Arts - featuring ceramics and sculptures from central America; on show in Paris from the Barbier-Muller Collection. Until Sunday, 9. September; from 12:00 to 18:00 daily except Mondays. Le Lion, le Lys et l'Abeille - Venice in decline in the 18th century had lost nothing of its power and seduction, as this exhibition within the 'Med-Arces' series shows. Until Monday, 10. September. La Dame de la Mer - the first lady oceanographer, Anita Conti travelled the world's oceans for a technical institute to look at fish, and stayed on to photograph everything maritime. Montmartre - Vendanges - last year the Butte's own vineyard produced a 'Cuvée Lapin Agile,' and this year may be even better. Find out on Saturday, 6. October when Montmartre has its annual wine fête and costume parade, which starts at the Mairie at 14:00 and is expected to arrive at the Rue des Saules about 16:00. Paris 18. François et Nicolas de Poilly - contributed to Paris reputation, beginning in 1630, as the capital of European engraving. 30th Festival d'Automne à Paris - a long and important program of opera, theatre and dance is included within this festival, which is dedicated to Merce Cunningham. Les Neuf Encientes de Paris - each phase of Paris has its own wall, rampart, barrier or today's Perifreak! This exhibition shows them all, all at once, and from Thursday, 13. Jardins en Fête - in Paris' 90 green spaces and gardens, a weekend orgy of flowers, demonstrations and exhibitions, all with the 'patrimoine végétal' as a theme. The place in front of the Hôtel de Ville will be transformed into a 'village de la fête, ' from 10:30 to 18:30. On Saturday, 22. and Sunday, 23. September, throughout Paris. On Friday, 21. September, the International Dahlia competition, at the Parc Floral, in the Bois de Vincennes.

Fireworks - part of the 5th arrondissement's Fêtes d'Automne program, sparkles in the sky starting at 21:00 on Saturday, 22. September, at the Quai Saint-Bernard. Paris 5. Métro: Jussieu or Gare d'Austerlitz.

La Route du Poisson - on the occasion of 'Horse Days' in Paris, the descendants of the draft-horses that used to bring fish to Paris daily from the Channel ports will be in action and on display. This may be a weekend event, beginning on Saturday, 29. September, but the draft-horses will be the leads on Sunday, 30. September. Check out the Route du Poisson Web site. Chillida - is one on the 20th century's most important sculptors and this exhibition features his works in all materials from lead to paper. Until Sunday, 16. September. The Château de Budapest - part of the Hungarian season called 'MAGYart' begins with this exhibition about the history of Budapest's Château; repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt.
