Rest of Show Goes On

Paris:- Saturday, 15. September 2001:- Not many new items are added to this week's column, but there are a few scattered throughout it.

On account of mourning in Paris for the victims of the tragedy in the United States, and for security reasons, some large events were postponed or canceled outright. According to the government's Web site for culture, the 'Journées du Patrimoine' have been 'annulled' - but I was unable to find out if this means canceled for this year. The fates of the planned 'Budapest Tram' and the 'Jardins en Fête' are also unknown.

Events for Fall 2001 were outlined in a separate column three weeks ago, and this has even been updated a little - but still remains within the issue 6.35. • The Fall / Winter Season Begins

Budapest Tram - is also within the framework of the 'Magyart' season. There just may a whole tram from Budapest parked in front of Paris' Hôtel de Ville. Originally scheduled from Thursday, 13. September until Sunday, 16. September. Paris 4. Métro: Hôtel de Ville. InfoTel.: 01 43 26 06 44.

Les Journées du Patrimoine - this was scheduled for the weekend of Saturday, 15. September and Sunday, 16. September. It is unknown if this has been canceled. If not, France shows off its treasures, some of which are not usually open to the public, such as some of Paris' churches. Paris' own 'Maison des Parisiens' - the Hôtel de Ville - also opens its doors on Saturday from 14:00 to 18:00 and on Sunday from 9:30 to 18:00. Main entry by the front door. Hôtel de Ville, Paris 4. Les Neuf Enceintes de Paris - each phase of Paris has its own wall, rampart, barrier or today's Perifreak! This exhibition shows them all, all at once, and from now until Sunday, 18. Jardins en Fête - in Paris' 90 green spaces and gardens, a weekend orgy of flowers, demonstrations and exhibitions, all with the 'patrimoine végétal' as a theme. The place in front of the Hôtel de Ville will be transformed into a 'village de la fête, ' from 10:30 to 18:30. On Saturday, 22. and Sunday, 23. September, throughout Paris. On Friday, 21. September, the International Dahlia competition, at the Parc Floral, in the Bois de Vincennes.

Fireworks - part of the 5th arrondissement's Fêtes d'Automne program, sparkles in the sky starting at 21:00 on Saturday, 22. September, at the Quai Saint-Bernard. Paris 5. Métro: Jussieu or Gare d'Austerlitz.

François et Nicolas de Poilly - contributed to Paris reputation, beginning in 1630, as the capital of European engraving. In addition to 100 of their prints, views of Paris at the beginning of Louis XIV's reign. From Tuesday, 18. September until Thursday, 11. October. Leclerc et Ses Hommes - Crossed Destinies - the victor of Koufra, liberator of Paris and Strasbourg, did it all with a wide variety men from all stations in life, who contributed to his and their own destinies. Presented with a background of comics from 1948-49, this exhibition begins on Tuesday, 18. September and continues until Sunday, 20. January 2002. Open daily except Mondays, from 10:00 to 17:40. Jenny Holzer - will be arranging projections of texts along the Seine, on the Louvre, on the stairs of the Bibliothèque Nationale, on the trees of the Tuileries and on the Obelisk in the Place Vendôme. From Thursday, 20. September until Monday, 24. September, beginning at 21:00. Then from Friday, 21. September until Sunday, 4. November there will be an exhibition in the Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière, 47. Boulevard de l'Hôpital, Paris 13. Métro: Saint-Marcel. This is all within the Festival d'Automne program. Gestations - photographer Muriel Toulemonda was invited to Budapest for two months, to study horses, the Danube's waters and Budapest's contradictions. The results will be on display from Friday, 28. Patrimoine Disparu - from the time of Clovis until the end of the industrial revolution all sorts of important monuments - châteaux and jardins - have been disappearing. It's a wonder that there is anything left to look at. Madame de Pompadour's Bellevue at Meudon may be long gone, but a wisp of drawings remain. On view from Thursday, 20. September until Sunday, 16. (Almost) No Cars - will be circulating in Paris next Saturday, 22. September. Very restricted will be the centre of the city, the Bois de Boulogne and Vincennes, Montmartre and the two sides of the Bassin de la Villette. Other individual streets will be restricted too. Bikes, rollers and city buses will have all the freedom possible, from 07:00 to 19:00, when it will be 'back to normal' for Saturday night.

30th Festival d'Automne à Paris - a long and important program of opera, theatre and dance is included within this festival, which is dedicated to Merce Cunningham. Also to be featured is a new installation by Jenny Holzer, on view at the Salpêtrière from 20. September until 4. November. From Monday, 17. September until Friday, 21. December, when winter starts. De Caricatures en Tous Genres - Balzac went bust as a publisher, so he joined Philipon to found the weekly, 'La Caricature,' which featured Daumier, Grandville and Monnier, to name a few. Philipon founded the first illustrated daily, 'Le Charivari.' Continues until Sunday, 23. September. Except on Monday, from 10:00 to 17:40. At the Maison de Balzac, 47. Rue Raynouard, Paris 16. La Guerre Civile en Espagne - 150 photos both by the combatants, and by professionals, such as Robert Capa; shot from February 1936 until the war's end. Until Sunday, 23. September. Cinquante Ans de Sculpture Espagnole - presents 19 significant Spanish artists, from the last half of 20th century, with some works made especially for this expo, which will be shown later in Madrid, in the Retiro. Coincidences Fatales - is the name on an exhibition subtitled 'Alfred Hitchcock et l'Art' which features 200 art objects plus 300 photos from Hitchcock's films, some film posters, and 40 extracts from the master's films. Hans Erni - was one of the 20th century's most prolific book illustrators as well as being a poster designer, sculptor and painter. His works are on view until Sunday, 30. September. Paris' Canals - are featured in an exhibition with the full title of 'De Biefs en Ecluses, Les Canaux de Paris.' Canals are still used for working, but mainly for all sorts of pleasures - not like in the 19th century when Parisians were short of water. Paysages d'Entre - Villes - will be an open-space or garden show, presenting the works of various artists, including the Stalker group from Rome. L'Or des Rois Scythes - this exhibition will fill up the Grand Palais until the end of the year, and may be the last expo in it for some time. Beginning on Thursday, 27. September. La Route du Poisson - on the occasion of 'Horse Days' in Paris, the descendants of the draft-horses that used to bring fish to Paris daily from the Channel ports will be in action and on display. This may be a weekend event, beginning on Saturday, 29. September, but the draft-horses will be the leads on Sunday, 30. September. Check out the Route du Poisson Web site. International Dance Festival - will be taking place from Tuesday, 2. October until Saturday, 20. October. Montmartre - Vendanges - last year the Butte's own vineyard produced a 'Cuvée Lapin Agile,' and this year may be even better. Find out on Saturday, 6. October when Montmartre has its annual wine fête, costume parade, which starts at the Mairie at 14:00 and is expected to arrive at the Rue des Saules about 16:00. Paris 18.
