Risky Business - is the life for photo reporters, especially when the agencies they work for are taken over by Bill Gates' 'Corbis' unit. La Nouvelle Athènes - many think the Second Empire period of the 19th century represented the 'Belle Epoque' but forget the preceding intimate and literary period that associated Balzac, Dumas, Baudelaire, Chopin and Georges Sand, with the 'July Monarchy,' all within a small area in the 9th arrondissement's 'Nouvelle Athènes.' Kannibals et Vahinés - how we looked at the south seas, as seen through popular literature from the end of the 18th century until now. Year of the Horse - is the name given to the coming Chinese New Year, on Tuesday, 12. February. This year there will be two celecbrations - one on Tuesday and the other on Sunday, 17. Rétromobile - starting on Friday, 8. February everybody will be going out to the Porte de Versailles to get 'rétro' again, in the wheel sense - which will include as usual motorcycles and boats, all museum pieces - some of which are for sale. Try to get yours before the final day on Sunday, 17. February. Hours are usually from 11:00 to 19:00, but start earlier on Saturday and Sunday, and go later on Tuesday and Friday. 'Vieux Papiers' - info is skimpy for this big event, other than the mention that this year's theme is 'the cat.' 'Old papers' means collectible ones. Dates are Thursday, 21. Salon de l'Agriculture - which is known by all Metropole readers as the 'Paris Beautiful Cow Show.' It returns for another run this year, from Friday, 23. February until Sunday, 3. March. La Révolution Surréaliste - will be a major exhibition dealing with, possibly, the 'exile' of the Surrealists during WWII. Starting Wednesday, 27. February and continuing until Monday, 24. June. 6th Festival de l'Imaginaire - features traditional music and song from countries as wide apart as Egypt, Korea and Brazil in this festival lasting from Tuesday, 5. March until Sunday, 7. April. The Salon du Livre - features the entire 'touch' of the French publishing world, which is considerable. Italy, another big publishing country, is this year's 'country of honor.' Semi-Marathon de Paris -is the 10th edition of this little 21 kilometre stroll through Paris' 13th and 12th arrondissements and the Bois de Vincennes is scheduled for Sunday, 10. March. The lower sign-up fee deadline is 24. February. A higher fee will be charged after this date, up to Saturday, 9. March. Signing-up is not possible by fax. The sign-up fee is payable in euros. International Marathon de Paris - is the 26th edition and it takes place in Paris about a month later, on Sunday, 7. April. This 'big one,' of 42.195 kilometres - has room for 30,000 runners. It takes routes into both the Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes, but mainly runs through Paris' centre on the right bank, with a dip into the 16th arrondissement. The sign-up deadline is 17. 'Voir des Etoiles' With Victor Hugo - for the bicentennial the focus is on Victor Hugo's theatre efforts, in cooperation with the Comédie Française and the Bibliothèque Nationale. With 200 years to look back on, Hugo's works stand the test of modernism. Beginning on Thursday, 11. April and continuing until Sunday, 28. July. From Tuesday to Sunday; from 10:00 to 17:40. Raphaël - Grâce et Beauté - Casanova said nobody did human figures better and he knew something about the subject. Raphaël Sanzio and 80 of his paintings are in the Senat's little gallery located in a Medicis park, after a 20-year absence from Paris. This popular exhibition has been extended to Sunday, 24. Madame Carven - is presented here showing 50 years of creative clothing, from 'afternoon' dresses to suits for air hostesses. The exhibition features designer clothing, sketches and photos from private collections and institutions such as the Musée du Parfum de Grasse. Continuing until Sunday, 26. May. Palais de Tokyo - this has been reopened as a 'Centre of Art,' facing the existing Paris' Museum of Modern Art. This is supposed to be an active 'happening,' where contemporary paint may still be wet and other arty things will be going on before your very eyes. Five different themes are currently featured. Sous le Soleil de Mithra - is an exhibition of religious subjects inspired by antiquity and done by Picasso - most likely also concerning some heads of bulls. Continuing until Monday, 4. March. Des Volcans et des Hommes - is an exhibition resulting from 10 years of inspecting volcanos around the world. Philippe Bourseiller was accompanied by Jacques Durie for this modest task, and the result is 100 large photos with detailed captions, hanging from the Senat's Luxembourg garden fence - along the Rue de Médicis and Rue de Vaugirard.
