Paris:- Saturday, 27.
July 2002:- Last Sunday's opening of the first
edition of 'Paris Plage' has coincided with the proper
weather to go with it, and it is proving to be a big
success. For this reason this 2nd special summer column
contains mostly outdoor 'Scenes.'
'Scene 1' - is the
regular column. It is two weeks old, but contains many of
the current cultural events, and some
future ones for the 'end of summer,' which officially
continues until the all-invited, all-night 'Nuit Blanche,'
to be held on Saturday-Sunday, 5-6. October. If you look at
this page, be sure to keep a lookout for any now 'expired'
dates of past events.
'Scenes
d'Eté' - is the summer events' column. It is
also two weeks old, but it lacks the many of the details of
outdoor items listed in this column. I thought these would
be readily available from other sources, but some readers
have asked for them here.
Many events listed below - by dates - are free for
come-as-you-are folks, but a few of them are not. Some
world-class professional artists have been engaged to give
world-class performances. On show, in Paris, this
summer.
If You Feel Lost
This year in Paris there are 170 'reception ambassadors'
scattered around the city, all of whom speak your
language.
There are eight reception posts run by the city and 23
in the RATP's transport network. This is within the
framework of 'Votre Eté à Paris' or 'Your
Summer In...' If you have any questions just look for the
young people wearing the orange jackets or their colorful
kiosks.
Not all of these ambassadors are Parisian university
students and not all are even French, but all have been
given a 10-day orientation course by the Tourist Office.
Their purpose is not only to answer visitors' questions,
but also to help visitors discover less obvious aspects of
Paris.
Outdoor Everything
Quartier d'Eté - is a vastly greater
variety of events to make up this year's summer Paris
program of mostly outdoor artistic treats - from techno to
opera to circuses - to be performed on streets, places and
unusual locations throughout the city. This program goes on
more or less non-stop until Saturday, 17. August. Some of
these events are free and others are not. The Quartier d'Eté
Web site may have more complete details than are listed
here. InfoTel.: 01 44 94 98 00.
It is also the summer of cinema in Paris, with films
being shown nightly, except Mondays, at La Villette's
walk-in outdoor cinema. Additionally, starting on Tuesday,
6. August, the Forum des Images takes
its movies outside too - to various locations all over
Paris.
Not listed here - but at least four theatres in Paris
are open with stage performances throughout August,
including 'man of the year' Victor Hugo's entire works
being staged at the Théâtre du Nord-Ouest,
until the end of the year. The others are the
Théâtre Comedia, the Comedie de Paris and the
Théâtre de la Gaité Montparnasse. Three
other 'spectaculars' are playing at the
Théâtre des Mathurins, the Palais des Glaces,
and until Wednesday, 7. August you can see 'Un Eté
avec Prevert' at the Théâtre des Champs-
Elysées.
