Seems Very Modern

Paris:- Saturday, 1. Feburary 2003:- This is what it is like here - there's real old historical stuff, some of which is being performed - and there is some real modern stuff, some being done by performance artists. If neither extreme suits you, Jacqueline Kennedy's pillbox hats are somewhere in the middle.

Zikrayat - is an Arabian dance spectacle, under the direction of Leila Haddad and company. Zikrayat rends homage to Oum Kalsoum, 'everybody's wife.' From Tuesday, 25. February until Wednesday, 2. Real Speed Dating? - in case you don't have any loved ones handy for Saint-Valentine's day, a French group called '7intheCity' is proposing a little soirée on Thursday, 13. February, with an 'After Work' evening at the 'Poloroom.' The objective is to avoid having to sit around alone watching Friday night TV, which is not known for the strength of its programming. Attention - this probably involves 'speed dating' so be sure your French is up to speed.

Masterpieces - the Musée d'Orsay recently opened its new and permanent photographic gallery, which includes many photos from photography's first century - the 19th. Memories du Lieu - the photographs of Bernard Plossu were reunited on 28 banners that also contained comments made by the personal of this museum that closed forever on Friday, 31. January after 72 years. The art déco-style Musée des Arts d'Afrique et d'Océanie sees its collections transferred to the warehouses of the Musée de Quai Branly, which will open in 2005. There are new plans for the classic building, but these are somewhat in the future. The museum's aquarium with its tropical treasures, remains open. Except Tuesdays, from 10:00 to 17:30. Notes - Coming Up - expect François-Marie Banier to begin at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie on Wednesday, 26. February. The Pavillon des Arts will feature 'Trajectories du Rêve du Romantisme au Surréalisme' from Friday, 7. March. More about Paris' mines will be featured at the Catacombs, beginning in March. Watch for 'Etre de Son Temps' at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaïsme, starting on Wednesday, 26. March. Suzanne Fritscher will be on view at the Musée Zadkine from April to June.

'Toucher au Bois' is tentatively scheduled for the Musée Cognacq-Jay from April to May. The Musée Carnavalet will host the cartoonist Plantu from May to September. Roughly at the same time in the same place - Lucien Jones and 'Shanghai.' Photographs by Marc Riboud will be on view from May to September in the Crypte de Parvis de Notre-Dame. Marlene Dietrich will be the subject of a big show at the Musée Galliera from May to September too. Jean Moulin's traces will be exhibited at the Mémorial Leclerc from May to October.

Further in the future - Gustave Moreau shows up at the Musée de la Vie Romantique beginning in July. Victor Hugo by Rodin will be at the Maison de Victor Hugo starting in September.

Dates for big events - the 23rd Salon du Livre begins on Friday, 21. March and continues until Monday, 31. March. Set aside Saturday, 21. June for the Fête de la Musique, most likely lasting all night.

The Year of Algeria - this is a multi-month multi-cultural series of dance, music and theatre events, beginning at the end of February and continuing until July.

Jeune Création - used to be the Salon for Young Painters, and still is Iposter: expo, fikret moualla, galerie visconti think. Anyhow, new stuff on show from Thursday, 20. February until Sunday, 2.
