Tourist Office To Move

Paris:- Saturday, 6. December 2003:- There are not a lot of new items in this week's column, mainly because it's already full. If it isn't enough, there are two other Scéne columns - Scène Noël and Scène's Eves to scroll through.

The major news is that the L'Office de Tourisme et des Congrès de Paris, usually referred to here as the PTO, will close its doors on the Champs-Elysées forever at 19:00 on Wednesday, 31. December 2003.

Its new central location at 25-27. Rue des Pyramides will not be open for business until next June. From now until then, the PTO's services will be scattered around the city. See the updated Links page for details about locations and open times.

Jean-Honoré Fragonard - popular but not well-known, a selection of Fragonard's works are featured in an exhibition of drawings, from both ends of a long and varied career. To continue until Monday, 8. March 2004. Open from 9:00 to 17:30, and from 9:00 to 21:30 on Monday and Wednesday. Closed Tuesdays. Shanghai - is featured in two photo exhibitions. One is 'Shanghaï 1920-1950' and the other is 'Shanghai Hier et Demain' by Marc Riboud. Starting on Wednesday, 10. Canada Vraiment - That's Canada - it is a big and often cold place, with a lot of different people in it who keep pretty quiet. All the more reason for an exhibition about the whole thing, beginning on Tuesday, 16 December and continuing until Monday, 30. August. Vies de Châteaux - is an exhibition of 200 stamps with themes from the Middle Ages, plus 400 other objects from the same period are on view. Until Saturday, 24. Hugo Face à Rodin - with sculptures taking the time they do, Rodin spent nearly a lifetime working on Hugo. Collected in this exhibition along with other objects, it continues until Wednesday, 4. Latitudes 2003 - is an exhibition of art, photos and other objects, this year from the island of Réunion. Until Sunday, 4. January, from 10:00 to 19:00, and from 10:00 to 17:00 on 31. December. Confucius 551-479 - will be in another major 'Year of China' exhibition. This continues until Monday, 9. February 2004. Hours are 10:00 to 18:00, except on Tuesdays. Salon Nautique - is also know as the big 'boat show,' for floating-on-water fans. You can buy a boat, or buy a ticket for a cruise here. New but old-fashionedposter: anges dechus, photo expo, ljubica mrkalj sailboats are geatured this year. This continues until Monday, 15. December. Sale Days - is another title for 'Braderie de Paris,' where everything is 'on sale' at one discount or another, until Sunday, 14. December. Soldes d'Hiver - all my guesses were wrong for the start date of Paris' Winter Sales. Officially, they begin on Wednesday, 7. January, and the final day will be Saturday, 7. February. As always, early shoppers get the best bargains.

L'Œil de Simenon - this exhibition begins on Tuesday, 23. December and continuing until Sunday, 22. February. Except for Mondays and holidays, from 12:00 to 19:00, from 12:00 to 21:30 on Tuesdays and 10:00 to 19:00 on weekends. At the Galeries Nationales du Jeu du Paume, 1. Beijing Culture Week - is scheduled to begin on Saturday, 10 January with a photographic exhibition, which will continue until Sunday, 18. January. The 'week' willposter: villette program, nov dec be from Thursday, 22. January until Tuesday, 27. January. A parade on the Champs-Elysées is planned for Saturday, 24. Chinese New Year - the actual date is supposed to be Thursday, 22. January. Expect appropriate festivities on the weekend before, the actual day, and the weekend after - in Belleville, the 3rd arrondissement and in Chinatown in the 13th arrondissement - and on the Champs-Elysées. Au Cœur de l'Impressionnisme - at the end of the 19th century the family of Henri Rouart hobnobbed with art's avant-garde, while père Rouart was himself a painter. Also a collector, the collection was dispersed in 1912 - and some of it is reunited here. Beginning on Tuesday, 3. Fenurary and continuing until Sunday, 13. June. Aux Origines de l'Abstraction - takes us back to the period from 1800 to 1914, to show us how art evolved to a state considered modern - shown in 150 works, from Turner to Picabia. Botero - presents the works of the past five years from the South American artist - some not so light-hearted. This continues until Monday, 15. March 2004. Except Tuesdays, from 11:00 to 18:00 daily. Botticelli - subtitled, 'De Laurent Le Magnifique à Savonarole,' is a major exhibition brought to Paris by the Sénat. About 30 other contemporary artists are featured, including Leonardo. De Delacroix à Renoir - Algeria as seen by French painters of the past is the focus of this exhibition., which continues until Sunday, 18. January. Nicolas de Largillierre - this painter of the 'Grand Siècle' and the Regency is the star of this major exhibition which continues until Friday, 30. January. Queen Mary II - 'birth of a legend' may be a bit premature for the world's newest and hugest ocean liner, which hasjust been launched. But I can personally vouch for the Queen Mary I, so this show is worth seeing because the new ship will be made of good stuff too. Until Monday, 2. February 2004. Also, see 'Les Génies de la Mer,' which shows off navel sculpture, until the same date. From 10:00 to 17:45, except Tuesdays. At the Musée de la Marine, 17. Place du Trocadéro, Paris 16.
