Rétromobile 2000

If you wish to exhibit at the coming Rétromobile 2000, here are the telephone and fax numbers of the people who organize this exhibition: from outside France telephone 33 1 48 44 30 30; the faxphoto: cafe le beliere number is 33 1 48 44 15 15. These numbers were confirmed late last week and were found to be operating as normally as anything at Rétromobile.

I am including this information here because 'Rétromobile' is not on the Web and has no email. When asked why not, they said, 'Because we are Rétro.' The dates for the coming edition of Rétromobile 2000 are from Friday, 11. February to Sunday, 20. February 2000. At Paris-Expo.

The artists' 'Monts 14 Open Door' cocktail café and jazz club.

Judging from enquiries that have found their way here, this 2000 edition of Rétromobile is going to be one too good to miss. Its February date means that the weather may be less than winter, but we'll have to wait and see.

Metropole's 'Scene' Column

The 'Scene' column has gotten far too long. It is not that it contains everything that is happening in Paris, but I write too much for each item. At this time of year I usually add another page for special Paris Christmas items. And for this year, there are the '2000 in Paris' events too.

Instead of having three 'events' pages, I've made 'Scene' run over two pages, with Paris Christmas 99 and '2000 in Paris' being added to the second page.

Then in order to make some sense of it all I've added listsphoto: caves peret, daguerre of contents here and there, to save you from scrolling forever. If these work, you will be able to pop directly to what interests you, and be able to pop back and forth between the two pages.

Paris was flowing with Beaujolais Nouveau last week.

To do this, I had to read instructions and write a lot of code. The code for Web pages is pretty flaky and very fussy about being correct, so there may be some surprises. I 'tested' the pages and they worked - not as well with Explorer - but well enough.

If today's edition of Metropole Paris is late - and it's going to be - this change to this week's 'Scene' layout is the cause. I hope I have time to put some new items in it too.

As usual, let me know about any problems you have with it.

Café Metropole Club 6th Session Rehash

The 6th weekly meeting of the 'Café Metropole Club' ran off pretty successfully, without onion soup but a few jugs of Beaujolais Nouveau, last Thursday. Read all about it on last week's 'Club 'Report'' page. The coming 'Club' meeting is on Thanksgiving Day, which is not a holiday in Paris so the meeting will be held as usual.

This Was Metropole Two Years Ago:

Issue 2.47 - 25. November 1997 - The Café Metropole column had the unsnappy title - 'Rain and Wine, Weather and Beaujolais.' The 'Au Bistro' column was entitled 'The Second Last Red and Jospinomania!' - a mania-word that didn't catch on. This issue had two features, titled 'Fancy German Cars and Freibier' and 'Car Showrooms on the Champs-Elysées.' Two 'Posters of the Week' doubled to four and Ric's Cartoon of the Week was captioned 'Singing In the Rain.'

The Tour Eiffel Countdown to 31. December 1999:

Only 40 more mostly cloudy, damp and very cold, spottily snowy, and occasionally rainy Paris and Ile-de-France autumn days to go until the really big year-end party bursts upon us.
