"Prague is even more smoky," Alena says, "It would probably be a good place to hold a club meeting too."

While we can still barely see each other across the table, I suggest that it must be 'Group Photo of the Week' time. This doesn't get seconded, but being aphoto: table group bit grouchy does get some action. Standing up, Laurent turns out to be today's tallest club member, and nearly gets his head lopped off in the group's club portrait.

For brief moments at today's meeting, there was normal behavior.

Eva and Dinny trade restaurant tips for the 15th arrondissement. They both know a place that is really good - it has one dish of the day, served with three kinds of noodles. You get up and chose which you want.

I object to this. I didn't come to Europe so that I could eat in places where I have to serve myself. The reason I don't eat at McDo's isn't because of junkfood, it is because there's no service.

Dinny thinks I am being silly. "You don't have to cook and you don't have to wash dishes," she says. McDo's doesn't do either, either, I think.

Briefly, there is a lull in the conservation until Dinny says, "I can't believe we drank the whole bottle!" But when she picks it up to make sure, it drops a third of a glass into her glass, and she immediately makes sure the whole bottle is truly empty.

This brings today's meeting to a tidy end with a dot beneath the exclamation point, surrounded by empty glasses.

Keep In Mind - Paris' Winter Sales 2002

For Christmas shopping, all of Paris' 'grands magazins' will be open on the Sundays of 8, 16 and 23. in December. All other stores in Paris will be open on these Sundays too.

Early in 2002, the New Year's Winter Sales begin on Wednesday, 9. January and continue until Saturday, 16. February. Then 'spring shopping' is scheduled to start.

The Club's Meeting In New York City On 27. December

photo: sign, no smoking area The Thursday, 27. December club meeting in Manhattan is slowly getting arranged. Members who have considered how La Corona works as a clubhouse in Paris, are giving extra thought to New York's new world conditions, and how a club meeting might fit into them.

All suggestions concerning the meeting's location in a suitable New York place and other basic survival tips will be appreciated. Also, you are welcome to attend the meeting even if you don't get an email announcement, or are not yet a signed-in member.

The Club's Meeting In Paris On 27. December

The Café Metropole Club's regular meeting in Paris on Thursday, 27. December is now a certainty. The server-lady Linda Thalman has graciously abandoned plans for a luxo holiday in Cuba to be your host - er, the 'secretrary' - for this meeting at La Corona. If Internet 'magic' works, members attending this meeting will be included in a 'stereo' meeting report, datelined Paris/New York.

The 'Clubhouse' Renovation

La Corona is the regular 'clubhouse' for the Café Metropole Club and it is currently being renovated. Today I was told that La Corona is most likely going to be able to resume hosting our meetings on Thursday, 20. December.

This means the next meeting on Thursday, 13. December, will be held in Le Café Lodi.

La Corona's re-opening is scheduled for the weekend of 15-16. December. If you feel like giving the club's café a trail run before the meeting on the following Thursday, do so by all means.

Next Meeting - At Le Café Lodi

The next meeting of the Café Metropole Club, on Thursday, 13. December, will be held in Le Café Lodi.

Le Café Lodi is located at 24. Quai du Louvre. It is about 43 or 62 metres away from La Corona, towards the Pont Neuf, next to the second souvenir shop, next to the pet shop.

The 'About the Café Metropole Club' Page

You can learn more than you need to know about this club if you think this will improve your appreciation of its non-rules - by reading 'About the Café Metropole Club' - which also explains exactly where to find the club in Paris - usually - and the day and time of the meetings.

You will also be able to find out that you can easily become a member of this online magazine's free and real club in Paris, by simply coming to a meeting. You can safely ignore all of the club's expired 'rules,' because they have been abolished because 'no rules' is the club's only 'rule' now.

Date, Time and Location of Next Meeting

The next Café Metropole Club meeting's time, date and location details are above. Whatever else happens it will be a Thursday again. It is also the annual day known as Sainte-Lucie, which is not any kind of a holiday in France.

Incidently, today was Saint-Nicolas, which is not any kind of a holiday either in France - but did youphoto: lodi terrace heater, quai du louvre know that Saint-Nicolas is the patron saint of sailors, virgins, scholars, children, thieves and Russia? I only remembered to include this important update in the nick of time.

Out on the Quai du Louvre in winter - with the Lodi's terrace heater.

The following day - next week - will be an ordinary Friday, called Sainte-Odile's Day. If Fridays are a favorite day of yours, make the most of it - there will only be 3 more of them this year.

Your club's meeting time will begin at 15:00 and zoom along to 17:00 in Europe's Central European Time Zone - which is 'CET' for short and not 'ZOZO' - and elsewhere known as 3 pm to 5 pm in zones without 'Euro-type' 24-hour time.

The club's secretary, sometimes known as 'Ed,' will be making some 'report' notes during the meeting. This is only an idle club pastime - and not a 'rule!' - except for the secretary.

Be sure to have a new 'Quote of the Week' ready or come with your own 'City of the Week' if it is a new one, or even haul along any other 'Things of the Week.' New 'rules' will be scorned, as usual.

Your comments, casual or complete slip-ups, will be received by the other members present, if they happen to overhear them - and by all readers of this online magazine, if they happen to read them, if they happen to be written here.

The club's temporary location-café is:

Le Café Lodi
24. Quai du Louvre
Paris 1. Métro: Pont-Neuf or Châtelet.

A bientôt à Paris,
